Country Sunrise Special has been joyfully makin’ music for more than twenty-five years. We have evolved from our early beginnings as The Nicholas Family some 60+ years ago.

Art Nicholas, his father and siblings, entertained at festivals, schools, churches and social functions, throughout Art’s growing up years. When Art married and began his own family, it was natural that the music would continue. Art, his father, siblings, spouse and children, were honored to represent both Ohio and West Virginia at the International Folklife Festivals held in Washington D.C. in the early and mid 1970’s. Recordings of The Nicholas Family’s music are included in the history files of America at the Smithsonian Institute.

Through the years, Art invited longtime musician friends to join the group as The Nicholas Family members moved away or were no longer able to participate on a regular basis. Thus began the transition to Country Sunrise Special.

We honored Art’s memory with our first album, entitled ‘Works of Art’. Our second album 'By Request' was recorded in January 2007, and is now available.

Country Sunrise Special has entertained for countless festivals, schools, churches, assorted social functions and square dances. We have been fortunate to share the stage with well-known artists, including: Country Gentlemen, Stoneman Family, Lewis Family, Johnny Paycheck, Boxcar Willie, Larkin Family, IIIrd Time Out, Lost and Found, Dan Seals and others…

We offer tight mixed vocal harmonies and strong acoustic instrumentation, including banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, autoharp, harmonica and bass, in a pleasant mix of Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, Western-swing and Old-time melodies.

We can add dobro and/or dulcimer to our mix of instrumentation. Three in our group do a ’mean’ clog should the occasion arise. …and we have our own caller and fiddler should you wish to arrange a square-dance.
