Call for UK-wide alcohol prici

A UK-WIDE price limit on drink should be brought in to try to curb alcohol misuse, a specialist commission said yesterday.

The Alcohol Commission, which was set up by the Labour Party in Scotland, has recommended a ban on selling drink at below the "floor price" of the cost of production, plus the cost of duty and VAT.

However, the Scottish Government, which wants to see Gemstone Jewelry a minimum price per unit brought in for alcohol north of the border, accused it of "passing the buck to Westminster".

The commission was formed to find new ways of tackling Scotland's drinking culture but recommended action should be taken at UK level.

Commission chairwoman Professor Sally Brown suggested SNP ministers should lobby the UK coalition.
